The NIV 365-Day Devotional Reading Plan |
Day 180 of 365What if I'm not all that good at anything?
For every person who is overconfident in his abilities, there are many more who feel insecure or unimpressive - and some who do not think they have any talent at all. Part of this stems from the fact that we grow so familiar with the things we do well, they can lose their distinctiveness to us. These skills come so easily and naturally, we don't see why anybody else couldn't do the same thing at the same level, probably much better.
But despite how inferior we may sometimes feel, the Bible indicates that God has created every one of us as unique, gifted individuals. None of us is exactly the same, of course - "We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us" (Romans 12:6) - but neither are any of us left out or overlooked by our Creator, with nothing to distinguish ourselves from anybody else. In fact, God has even put you specifically in certain places - like the church, for instance - where your particular set of gifts and abilities match up with others to make a more effective, capable whole, "just as he wanted them to be" (1 Corinthians 12:18). You are not without ability. You are needed where you are.
