The Jesus Bible Reading Plan / PROCLAMATION THROUGH MUSIC

The Jesus Bible Reading Plan

Day 155 of 365

PROCLAMATION THROUGH MUSIC

King David knew the importance of proclaiming the wonders of God to increase the Lord's fame on the earth. He assigned 288 people the task of recounting God's works through singing and playing instruments. It was their full-time job to praise the Lord and to prophesy - to proclaim truths about who God is, what he had done and what he could do. Their music possessed weight; it was much more than a pleasant fanfare or simple song. It was intended to be heard, contemplated and absorbed. David's music leaders crafted anthems that carried the name of the Lord - creatively reminding people about their God and his care for them.
While Scripture does not depict Jesus using music for creative truth-speaking during his earthly ministry, he acted in ways similar to David as he taught the crowds - often telling parables to connect people to God. These stories spoke of God's character, addressed issues of the day and illustrated the Father in accessible, easily remembered ways. Christ's parables are full of truth about God and truth about people. They were difficult to ignore, often leaving listeners questioning and thinking about what they had heard. Jesus used as many as forty creative and poignant parables to paint pictures of the kingdom and its King (e.g., Mt 13:1 - 52).
Jesus, thank you for bringing your truths down to a level I can understand. Please help my mind and my heart to be open to you today, so I can better understand your mind and your heart. Amen.

1 Chronicles 25:6-8 NASB

6 All these were under the direction of their father to sing in the house of the L ord , with cymbals, harps and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the direction of the king. 7 Their number who were trained in singing to the L ord , with their relatives, all who were skillful, was 288.

Divisions of Musicians

8 They cast lots for their duties, all alike, the small as well as the great, the teacher as well as the pupil.
