Not in Heaven Yet

Wisdom is with aged men, and with length of days, understanding.

When Charles McKoy retired at age 71, he didn’t know what to do with the rest of his life. A friend invited him to preach in Asia, and McKoy accepted against the advice of friends. It led to the most fruitful period of his life. He preached around the world, and his influence penetrated the highest levels of academia and government.

On one occasion, McKoy arrived by ship in Yokohama to find a telegram informing him of his own death! A mistaken report announced he had died and been buried at sea, and the news had been reported in papers and pulpits across New York. Looking out the window of his hotel, McKoy saw crowds of soldiers and army trucks. He saw streets of asphalt. He noticed an ambulance with its siren shrieking. He knew he wasn’t in heaven yet, for in heaven there will be no soldiers or ambulances, and the streets will be gold. So Dr. McKoy resumed his schedule, went on traveling and teaching, and kept serving the Lord until age 88, when he finally made it safely to his heavenly home.

Does age bring wisdom? Not necessarily. But it should. As long as we remain on earth, we should be faithful at whatever the Lord gives us to do, serving with humility and gladness.

A fire kept burning on the hearthstone of my heart, and I took up the burden of the day with fresh courage and hope.
Charles F. McKoy
