Day 229 of 365
THE GIFT OF WATER
Joram was the king of Israel in Samaria, and though he did not worship the false god Baal like his father, Ahab, he was still an evil king. Joram went to war with Moab over lambs and wool, and to bolster his chances of military success he organized an alliance with Judah and Edom. Despite Joram's reputation, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, still joined the alliance without seeking God's wisdom or consulting with the prophet Elisha. Only after the coalition wandered lost in the wilderness of Edom for seven days and almost died of thirst did they seek God's help through the prophet. Elisha told them that God would miraculously provide. Overnight, without wind or rain, God filled the dry valley with water and brought confusion and ultimately defeat to the Moabites. This provision echoed an earlier incident in the wilderness at Horeb when God had miraculously rescued his people by causing water to flow where there was none (Ex 17:6).
Many years later, he provided life-sustaining water of an even better kind through his Son. Jesus offers living water to God's people. In Christ, thirsty souls can be satisfied and sins can be cleansed (Jn 4:7 - 14). In him, a wellspring forever flows with life (Rev 22:1).
Jesus, thank you for miraculously providing, even when I've stubbornly gone my own way and gotten off track. Help me to stay on course, depending daily on your living water. Amen.
2 Kings 3:14-20 NASB
14 Elisha said, "As the L ord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you nor see you. 15 But now bring me a minstrel." And it came about, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the L ord came upon him. 16 He said, "Thus says the L ord , 'Make this valley full of trenches.' 17 For thus says the L ord , 'You shall not see wind nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you shall drink, both you and your cattle and your beasts. 18 This is but a slight thing in the sight of the L ord ; He will also give the Moabites into your hand. 19 Then you shall strike every fortified city and every choice city, and fell every good tree and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.'" 20 It happened in the morning about the time of offering the sacrifice, that behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
John 4:7-14 NASB
7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." 11 She said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?" 13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."
