Why did Paul tell the Philippians that his purpose was to “know” Christ? Had not he met Christ on the road to Damascus long ago? Had not he served Him throughout the years? Why would a seasoned Christian apostle who had introduced multitudes to Christ say that he still needed to “know Him”?
The Amplified Bible, Classic Edition helps us understand Paul’s meaning. It renders this verse: “[For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly].”
We should never get to the point of being satisfied in our relationship with the Lord, for it’s a joy to continue our quest to know Him more dearly and love Him more deeply. We meet Christ at the Cross through conversion; but we meet with Him in the prayer closet through conversation, talking to Him in prayer and listening to Him in His Word. As we learn to practice His presence, we keep ourselves in His love and avoid what grieves Him.
Knowing Jesus—there is no better thing.
O most merciful redeemer, friend, and brother, may I know thee more clearly, love thee more dearly and follow thee more nearly day by day.
