Spring Cleaning—Put Off the Old by David Jeremiah

Spring Cleaning—Put Off the Old

APRIL 14, 2018
But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth…put off the old man with his deeds.
Colossians 3:8-9
When people hold garage sales to declutter, three things can happen to their stuff: It gets sold or given away to yard-sale shoppers; it gets taken to charity recyclers like Goodwill®; or it goes in the trash. Unless something is really valuable or meaningful, the inviolable rule of decluttering stands: Nothing, once removed, goes back in the house!
Lots of people hold yard sales in the spring as a result of their spring cleaning efforts. We need to be just as ruthless, on a daily basis rather than a seasonal basis, about decluttering our spiritual life. Have we gotten careless or lazy about our speech, our thoughts, our behaviors, our choices, our relationships, or how we spend our free time? Instead of putting them out (in the yard), the Bible says to put them off.
Look at your life in Christ. Is there anything you can’t justify keeping? Purpose to put it off and put on the new—the new life in Christ Jesus.
Never is a man…rightly clothed till he has put on the Lord Jesus Christ.
J. C. Ryle
