God looked on His creation of man and saw it was good. Still, something was missing. Man, although created in God's image, did not express all those beautiful characteristics of a tender, loving God. Therefore, God decided to make woman. Man needed a "helpmate." When God completed His work and like a proud father presented her to Adam, the man burst out in poetic exclamation: This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man (Genesis 2:23).
Alone, neither man nor woman can express all the qualities of our God. God created male and female, and together they bear the image of God: So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them (Genesis 1:27). It takes both male and female to make humanity.
Marriage was ordained to bring man and woman together as a unit, completing God's creation. Jesus lays special stress on this principle: But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate (Mark 10:6-9). In our marriages, we need to properly reflect the character of God.
“And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”
Genesis 2:18 KJV
