Blessed to Bless

I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing.

Genesis 12:1-4
There’s an old song that says, “Count your blessings, name them one by one.” What if we changed the words to: “Count your obligations, name them one by one.” It doesn’t have a poetic ring to it, but consider this: Every blessing is an obligation. It’s an opportunity for service. When God gives us blessings, we become stewards of those blessings.

Has He given you children? What a blessing! But now you must seek to raise them in the nurture and instruction of the Lord. Has He given you abilities and talents? You must use them to strengthen others. Has He given you money? You must use it wisely and devote a portion of it to the expansion of the kingdom. Has He bestowed good health? Remember that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and He longs to live His life through you. Has God given you a place of leadership? Be faithful and diligent, and lead prayerfully and wisely.

One of the great secrets of fulfillment is receiving God’s blessings. Another is remembering He blesses us so we will be a blessing to others.

The Bible teaches us that we are blessed not just so that we can feel good, not just so we can be happy and comfortable, but so that we will bless others.
