One, Then Two, Then One

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Genesis 2:24

Matthew 19:3-6
One of the most important verses in Scripture is Hebrews 4:12. It says God’s Word is able to divide between “soul and spirit” and between “thoughts and intents of the heart.” Who among us can tell where the soul ends and the spirit begins? Who can know when a thought turns into an intent? There are some lines of demarcation that are not possible to know.

Something similar happens in marriage. God first had one flesh in the Garden of Eden—Adam—and from the one made two—Adam and Eve. Then He took the two and made them one again by uniting them in a covenant called marriage: “and they shall become one flesh.” This is a level of bonding, a kind of oneness that cannot be discerned. When two people become one it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins—just like spirit and soul and thoughts and intents. In marriage, that only happens as spouses remain submitted (Ephesians 5:21) and committed (Ephesians 5:33) to one another in covenant love.

Marriage is a mysterious sharing and uniting of husband and wife with each other (Ephesians 5:32). The glory is in the mystery and joy of two being one.

A Single Thought: Creativity and focus are two benefits of being single—providing freedom to pursue avenues of interest and purpose.
