The Power of Words

How fair is your love, my sister, my spouse! How much better than wine is your love, and the scent of your perfumes than all spices!
Song of Solomon 4:10

Ephesians 4:15; Colossians 4:6
A man unexpectedly loses his wife and he calls her phone in anguish just to hear the sound of her voice. Or a girl loses her boyfriend and refuses to delete his last voice mail—her only link to her lost love. It’s a well-known technique used in film to illustrate the pain of loss—the unwillingness to erase the voice of a loved one from an answering machine or voice mail.

There should be no surprise that words are so powerful; God chose words, written and living, to communicate with us. Written words are powerful, but nothing touches like the sound of the human voice—especially the voice of one we love. But words are a double-edged sword, especially in marriage where people know each other so well. Words can harm and words can heal. When truth is spoken it must be with love (Ephesians 4:15). Words must always be “seasoned with salt” (Colossians 4:6). We must be “swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19). Communication is at the heart of marital oneness and unity.

If you are married, purpose to use your words to awaken, nurture, and deepen your love for your spouse.

A Single Thought: Kind words are the music of the world.
