Who Owns Your Body?

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
1 Corinthians 6:19

1 Corinthians 6:20
If we borrow our neighbor’s lawn mower, we might make sure it’s clean and full of gas when we return it. If a teenager is given the family car to use for a social outing, he makes sure it is clean and undamaged (even topped off with gas) before handing the keys back. We might call it the “Golden Rule of Borrowing”: Treat the property of others in a manner consistent with the owner’s expectations.

The Bible says that our human body is not our own; it is the temple of the Holy Spirit. The human body is part of the image of God in humans on earth—the physical manifestation of God’s presence by the Spirit. Since our body belongs to God, we have an obligation to use it in ways that honor Him (1 Corinthians 6:20). And that applies to marriage as well. Everything the Bible says about the physical relationship between husband and wife (for example, 1 Corinthians 7:1-7) is based on God’s ownership of His creation, including our bodies.

Single or married, think of yourself as a steward of your physical body—another means for glorifying Him on this earth.

A Single Thought: All that we are belongs to God.
