Puppy Love

…but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24

Lindsey Vonn is Tiger Woods’ ex-girlfriend, a jet-setter, and a championship skier. Her romantic breakups left her so depressed, she said, she bought a dog. “I’m pretty lonely, to be honest, and it’s been nice to have my dog. I feel like sometimes when I have a bad day it’s hard to go home. It’s pretty depressing just to be alone. It’s nice to have a friendly, smiling little puppy face excited for me to come home whether I win or lose.”1

Even the rich and famous can be sad and lonely. Who can blame Lindsey for her puppy love? A pet can be a great comfort during a lonely period. A few good friends also help, along with a supportive church and, when possible, a family circle.

But don’t forget the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. We can’t avoid feelings of loneliness, but we can minimize their consequences as we practice the presence of God. He’s there when you awaken, when you start your day, when you expend yourself during the day, and when you retire in the evening. He is truly our Best Friend.

The most frequent promise in the Bible is "I will be with you."
