So Be It / Day 16

So Be It

Day 16 of 50

The hypocrites loved to pray aloud on street corners in order to be viewed as “holier” than most. They would often praise themselves and their own works, all the while casting judgment on others (Luke 18.10-14). The moment people see them and say, “Wow! Look how righteous they are!” the reward has been issued. The reward was that pat on the back. The reward was of this world.

Using weighty words or speaking to God in Shakespearian English won’t get you far. Praying with family is good, but it should not be the only time to pray. Praying with friends, or at church, or before meals is great too! But if you only pray to be seen and heard by others, so that they think of you as a devoted follower of God, you are missing the point—and you may be in the bunch that Jesus rebukes.

Jesus wants us to pray authentically. He’s not into show. He wants our hearts directed towards Him, and no one else. So talk to God as you would a close friend. Ask of God as you would ask a loving father. Pray privately—not for show—and your reward will be far better than just a pat on the back. It will be out of this world.

Father, forgive me for praying with lots of weighty or empty words at times. Forgive me for praying just to be seen or heard by others. Help me not to pray as a hypocrite would, rather, help me to make prayer a private priority. I ask that our times of prayer be authentic, and my heart be opened before you. May I never conceal, but may I reveal all, and come to You as a Father who is all-knowing. In Jesus’ name, Amen and So Be It. Matthew 6:5-9

Matthew 6:5-9 KJV

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
