Victory Over Fear

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

In the history of warfare, victors have rarely, if ever, done away with their enemies completely. Rather, the defeated group lays down its arms and surrenders to the victor. To one degree or another, the victorious group stays alert to its enemy’s presence. Being victorious doesn’t mean the threat of war is eliminated. But it does mean the immediate crisis has passed.

One of the Christian’s enemies in spiritual warfare is fear. But we have been given power, love, and a sound mind to overcome fear and defeat it (2 Timothy 1:7). Once defeated, will fear cease to approach us? No. Fear is always there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to attack. But if we live in a state of victory, never letting down our defenses, fear cannot attack and defeat us. Regardless of how fearful the circumstance, “we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

The secret to living victoriously over fear is living moment-by-moment in Christ: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). Christ was never stymied or overcome by fear, and we should not be either. If we are afraid, it is us, not Christ in us.

I more fear what is within me than what comes from without.
Martin Luther
