NIV 365 / Choosing a Pearl

The NIV 365-Day Devotional Reading Plan

Day 280 of 365

Choosing a Pearl

Jesus spoke of a valuable pearl, which he compared to the kingdom of heaven (see Matthew 13:45 - 46). Pearls have been harvested for thousands of years and have often been associated with purity. As a single woman I choose to wear a pearl ring. It's a reminder to me that I am loved and chosen for heaven. It is also a reminder to make pure choices. Even if I reach out to touch someone or pick up a book, I see the pearl, and it reminds me in a subtle, beautiful way.
The pearl is a soft, breakable gem, so it is in a simple setting that protects it. I need protection too. When I am tempted, I cannot rely on my will power or a last-minute prayer for protection. I need to surround myself in ways that will safeguard me. I need margins so I am never too close to the edge of falling into sin.
I have created boundaries for myself. I have determined that I will not have sex, watch pornography or read erotic books. These are good limits, but they are outside limits. I need to set myself apart from temptations. For me, that means I will not put myself in compromising situations. I will not read a book that has sexual scenes, and I will walk away when someone tells an inappropriate story.
I also need a positive setting. I will look at the pearl each day and pray for God's protection. I will enjoy good movies, positive things online and uplifting books. And I will have fun with girlfriends or groups of friends. I will fill my life with purpose and people who remind me that I am loved and chosen for heaven. To God I am a valuable pearl - the price was his Son.
