Christmas Notes: Echoing Their Joyous Strains (Proclamation) by David Jeremiah

TODAY'S TURNING POINT WITH DR. DAVID JEREMIAH

Christmas Notes: Echoing Their Joyous Strains (Proclamation)

December 24, 2016
Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us.
Luke 1:68-69a
As early as the fourth century A.D. in Rome, Latin hymns were composed for Christmas. As the Church expanded into Europe, Britain, and eventually America, more and more hymns were added to the Church’s Christmas repertoire. The more popular of these hymns are now known as “Christmas carols” and are a beloved part of the Christmas celebration.
Recommended Reading: Luke 1:67-79
While formal Christmas hymnody may have begun in the fourth century, the actual birth of Christ was marked by many songs (psalms). When Mary, the mother of Jesus, visited her relative Elizabeth, she recited the hymn we call today “The Magnificat” (Luke 1:46-55). When John the Baptist was born just before Jesus, Zacharias sang a hymn now known as “The Benedictus” (Luke 1:67-79). The angels announced His birth to the shepherds in Bethlehem’s fields (Luke 2:13-14) and the elderly Simeon recited a psalm in the Temple when he first saw Jesus (Luke 2:27-32).
Make every effort to attend a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day service to join your voices with others in proclaiming Christ’s birth.
