Head and Body by David Jeremiah

Head and Body

And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

For years we have known about human organ transplants: heart, kidney, liver, lung, and so on. In recent years, transplants have included hands and faces. Currently, an Italian neurosurgeon is planning the first human head transplant, obviously the most complex transplant to date. Ethical and technical issues aside, this transplant illustrates an important truth: The body separated from the head cannot function.

The New Testament uses the human body to illustrate the relationship between Christ and the Church: Christ is the head and the Church is the body. The implication is obvious: We, the Church (Body of Christ), take our life and direction from Christ, (the head of the Church). He has given us a promise-based mission to fulfill, along with spiritual gifts and guidance to make it possible. If we, the Body of Christ, allow our intimacy with Christ to wane, then our hope, power, and direction will wane as well.

Maintain your purpose and hope by staying intimately connected to the Head of the Church daily.

No aspect of Christ’s relationship to the church looms larger in Holy Writ than the fact that He is its Head.
