New Year’s Resolutions – Keep Your Promises

Do what has proceeded out of your mouth.

Numbers 32:24b
While cleaning out his house last year, Darwin Day, 70, of Grand Prairie, Texas, found an old set of Topps baseball cards, dating from 1957-1958. The cards had been included with packets of Bazooka bubblegum. One of the cards offered a prize to those who correctly filled out the scores of certain teams. Since there was no deadline listed on the card, Day filled it out and sent it in. Executives of Bazooka were surprised, but they sent Day a package that included a baseball glove, T-shirts, a Bazooka pillow, and lots of bubble gum—even though the contest had ended sixty years ago.1

If a bubblegum company knows how to honor its word, how much more should we? During the course of a day, we sometimes give promises or reassurances in order to make others feel better or to be polite. Sometimes our promises fall through the cracks like leaves off an old bridge. But remember this old quip: Promises are like crying babies in the theater. They should be carried out at once.
This year, shore up your integrity. Be careful what you promise, and be careful to do what you have promised. Do what has proceeded out of your mouth.
The foundation stones for a balanced success are honesty, character, integrity, faith, love, and loyalty.
