The Jesus Bible Reading Plan / ATTITUDE

The Jesus Bible Reading Plan

Day 181 of 365

ATTITUDE

Pride and humility are defining traits of the human heart. No one can see either characteristic, but the manifestations of both pride and humility are seen in the actions of all humans. Throughout the proverbs, Solomon connected pride with foolishness and ultimate destruction (Pr 16:18). In contrast, he linked humility with wisdom and the fear of the Lord, leading to life and blessing (Pr 22:4; 29:23). Pride vaunts the person to the supreme arbitrator of life and demonstrates a lack of submission to God as the One who knows how best life should be lived. Discounting God's wisdom through human pride invariably leads to destruction in this life and the next. Humility, in contrast, affirms God is sovereign, omnipotent and omniscient. He knows how life should be lived far better than humans, whose vision is always limited in this life (1Co 13:12). God stands in opposition to the proud, but promises his faithfulness and grace to the humble in heart (Jas 4:6).
Jesus, protect me from the slippery slope of pride. I want to be humble as you were humble. Amen.

Proverbs 11:2 NASB

2 When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom.

James 4:6 NASB

6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, "G od is opposed to the proud , but gives grace to the humble ."
