Oaks of Righteousness

They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.

Earlier this year, Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church of Bernards, New Jersey, noticed that the 600-year-old ancient white oak on its property had died. There was nothing to do but cut it down. But a few miles away on the campus of Union County College, there was an oak that had grown from an acorn of the Basking Ridge oak. The younger tree, which was planted in 2001, had grown to 20 feet. But workers, armed with determination and donations, transplanted the younger tree from the college to the church, where it now provides stature and shade in the place of its departed father-tree.

The Bible often compares God’s people to trees (see Psalm 1; Jeremiah 17:5-8). One of the most important aspects of a tree-like faith is doing our very best to produce the acorns of evangelism. Psalm 71:18 says, “Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to everyone who is to come.”

Who will one day stand in your place in the house of the Lord?

God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him.
