Loving a Loveless Age

Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Titus 3:1-8
Most of us wouldn’t call those around us “liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” But that’s how Paul described the people of Crete among whom Titus labored (Titus 1:12-13). Titus had his work cut out for him. He was to teach the new Cretan believers how to love in a loveless culture. They should love what is good (1:8) and be sound in love (2:2). The older women should teach the younger ones to “love their husbands, to love their children” (2:4). The believers should love each other (3:15). And these new relationships of love are only possible because “the kindness and the love of God our Savior … appeared” (3:4).

As Christians, we’re called to love as Christ loves us—realistically, sacrificially, purposefully, willingly, and absolutely. We don’t learn to do this by television shows or societal trends, but by studying our Bibles and observing how God loves us.

We’re surrounded by a culture of coarseness and crudeness. We live among people who are liars, evil, lazy, and gluttonous. But a lost world needs a loving touch, and a lonely world needs someone reflecting the love of Jesus Christ.

Let’s live for Christ among the Cretans!

Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved as to love.
