The Jesus Bible Reading Plan / KING AND PRIEST

The Jesus Bible Reading Plan

Day 310 of 365

KING AND PRIEST

In mercy, the Lord continued to reveal his purposes and plans. The word of the Lord came to Zechariah, instructing him to get silver and gold from a few of the exiles for the purpose of making a crown.
Typically, a crown was reserved for a king. However, the Lord told Zechariah in this text to place it upon the high priest's head. Joshua took on some kingly symbolism in this vision, showing his significant role in the rebuilding of the temple (v. 12). As the passage continues, it details a certain harmony between these two offices (v. 13). The people needed governance to build the temple; yet the temple needed priests to offer sacrifices.
The degree of unity between these offices depicted in Zechariah foreshadowed a perfect harmony to come. While Zerubbabel and Joshua served individually, Jesus - the Branch of Jesse (Isa 11:1) - would come to unite the offices; he would rule as King and intercede as Priest. Zechariah 6:9-15 NASB

9 The word of the L ord also came to me, saying, 10 "Take an offering from the exiles, from Heldai, Tobijah and Jedaiah; and you go the same day and enter the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah, where they have arrived from Babylon.

The Symbolic Crowns

11 Take silver and gold, make an ornate crown and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. 12 Then say to him, 'Thus says the L ord of hosts, "Behold, a man whose name is Branch, for He will branch out from where He is; and He will build the temple of the L ord . 13 Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the L ord , and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices."' 14 Now the crown will become a reminder in the temple of the L ord to Helem, Tobijah, Jedaiah and Hen the son of Zephaniah. 15 Those who are far off will come and build the temple of the L ord ." Then you will know that the L ord of hosts has sent me to you. And it will take place if you completely obey the L ord your God.
