How Do We Give? by David Jeremiah

How Do We Give?

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee?” (Sonnet 43) is a well-known love poem. She begins, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways,” and proceeds to list more than half a dozen ways. We understand the poet’s desire to meditate on the many reasons and ways of love. But it raises the question, “Can love be counted?” Quantifying love runs the risk of taking the focus off its beauty.

Biblical love is boundless, unconditional, sacrificial, and generous. God demonstrated His love by giving His Son’s life for ours. If our giving to God and others is motivated by love, we will spend less time figuring out how much to keep and more time in the act of giving. When we focus on love and generosity, we will always give more than if we focus on numbers.

That’s not to say we shouldn’t be careful stewards. But it is to remember that we are giving what God has first given to us. Our concern is less with how much we can keep than how much love we can show.

Give not from the top of your purse, but from the bottom of your heart.
