But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Hebrews 13:16
Texas and Louisiana were hit hard by Hurricane Harvey in late August 2017, and Hurricane Irma roared through Florida and the southeastern states in early September. Both hurricanes did extensive damage in the Caribbean and the United States. News reports showed gymnasiums and other large structures stacked high with relief supplies donated for the survivors: clothing, blankets, food, water, medical supplies. In those situations, donors aren’t seeking credit for their gifts. They are giving to meet urgent needs; they are giving out of love and compassion for the displaced.
The same thing happened in the early Jerusalem church. As the church grew, persecution increased; many new believers suffered as a result. So, the believers began bringing whatever they could to give to those in need. They weren’t seeking credit, they were demonstrating compassion. They weren’t after recognition, they were providing relief.
May our giving be as selfless as the early Christians. God sees and will bless our gifts all in His time—maybe in this life, maybe in eternity (1 Corinthians 3:11-15).
