EMPATHY

Not long ago, a minister had to tell the parents of a twelve-year-old boy that he had drowned in a school outing. Later, the parents told about that moment: "Reverend Allen didn't preach to us or tell us to be brave. He broke into tears and wept with us. We will always love him for that." This was the spirit Paul captured when he admonished believers to rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

So many of us are afraid to show sentiment; yet throughout God's Word are examples of great men who were moved to tears. David is the most vivid example, and even Christ wept over the city of Jerusalem. The psalmist said: Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy. He who continually goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him (Psalm 126:5-6).

We should resolve to show our sentiment today, as the opportunity arises. With those who have been most fortunate and are basking in the joy of recent accomplishments or blessings, may we sincerely rejoice and thank God. With those whose hearts have been broken, may we share their grief, feeling deeply for them, and reaching out to them in love.

“Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:15‬ ‭KJV‬‬
