Peculiar by David Jeremiah

Peculiar

Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.
Luke 10:3

The history of Christianity is dotted with the unusual. For example, Robert Sheffey (1820-1902) was known as the “Peculiar Preacher.” One day he was called to a cabin in the mountains. He had previously tried to win this family to Christ, but without success. As he rode up this time, things were different. One of the family members had been bitten by a rattlesnake and the family was sobered and fearful. Entering the house, Sheffey sank to his knees and prayed, “O Lord, we do thank thee for rattlesnakes. If it had not been for a rattlesnake they would not have called on You. Send a rattlesnake to bite Bill, one to bite John, and send a great big one to bite the old man!”

Before we recoil in horror, we should remember that Sheffey’s unorthodox prayers and sermons ushered multitudes of mountaineers into the kingdom of God and earned him the title of the “Peculiar Preacher.”

God has given different gifts and personalities to all His children, and it’s important that we faithfully use those gifts to serve Him. Wherever He sends us, He goes as well.

Remember two things: Be natural yourself, and let God be naturally Himself through you.
Oswald Chambers
