Draw Near / NO PLACE TO HIDE

NO PLACE TO HIDE

There are three things from which no one can escape: one's shadow, one's self, and God. Every child probably has tried to run from his shadow and found it impossible. A famed philosopher, explaining why a certain rich man was constantly unhappy even while traveling around the world, said, "Everywhere he goes, he takes himself with him." God's Word lets us know we cannot escape God: Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? (Psalm 139:7).

While to some the constant presence of God is frightful, to the believer it is a great comfort. The sinner finds no bottle deep enough, no drug trip long enough, no excess sufficient to keep God away or to quiet his nagging conscience. He is ever haunted because God created in him a God-shaped void that can be filled with nothing or no one else. The believer, on the other hand, finds no pleasure, joy, or happiness apart from his Lord.

David, deep in thought, confessed: If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me (Psalm 139:8-10). The great poet added that although God saw his imperfections, yet: How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! " (Psalm 139:17). No wonder David could relax, enjoying the sheer joy of God's nearness. Only those who have something to hide, hide from God. The true believer loves and longs for the presence of the ever-present One.

“My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139:15‬ ‭KJV‬‬
