Writing for the Future by David Jeremiah

Writing for the Future

Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
1 Corinthians 10:11

A recent online article on a popular news website listed ten benefits of journaling—a written record of the important events, insights, and lessons learned in life. Benefits listed include self-discipline, creativity, mindfulness, and self-confidence.1 For Christians, journaling can change self-confidence to “God-confidence.” While the psalmists didn’t call their writing journaling, it served a similar purpose: to record the faithfulness of God in the past to inspire faith in God in the future. For instance, David wrote in Psalm 34:4, “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”

Do you think that record of God’s faithfulness would inspire David in the future? No doubt—and journaling will do the same for us. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 10:11, the record of Israel’s experience with God was “written for our admonition.”

If you don’t keep a journal now, consider starting. And re-read it often to stay mindful of the faithfulness of God.

The gospel…is the record of a person who is the Truth.
