By Name by David Jeremiah

By Name

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.
Isaiah 43:1

In How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie wrote, “Men are so proud of their names that they strive to perpetuate them at any cost…. Remember that a man’s name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language.”

There is a Name far greater than ours—the Name above every name. It’s helpful to remember the names of others, but how wonderful to call God by name. His names reveal aspects of His nature. He is Jehovah, the self-existent one. He is Abba, our Father. He is the Ancient of Days, existing eternally. He is El Roi, the God who sees us. He is El Shaddai, God Almighty. He is Elohim, the Creator.

We can know God by name, but don’t forget—He also knows your name. According to John 10:3, Jesus “calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” If there’s anything better than knowing God by name, it’s knowing Him who says, “I have called you by your name; you are mine.”

In the Bible, God reveals himself by various names, mostly related to his ability to meet the needs of his people.
