Genesis opens with the creation story and closes with a coffin in Egypt. From the beautiful story of Adam and Eve in Eden's paradise, the story moves to the divinely chosen family in bondage. Covering more than two thousand years of human history, Genesis is known as the "book of beginnings." In Genesis, we find the beginning of time, life, marriage, sin, worship, human government, and salvation. Every major truth found in the Bible is alluded to in the book of Genesis.
The structure of Genesis is entirely different from that of any other Bible book. This book was written by Moses and carries the first prophecy of the coming Christ (Genesis 3:15). Another important prophecy concerns Abraham and his descendants. God said Jesus would be born from his family, and all those who would bless Abraham and his line would receive a blessing. On the contrary, those who cursed them would suffer. History is replete with fulfillment of this prophecy from earliest Bible times to our modern day. David Ben Gurion rightly said, "He who doubts the existence of God needs only to look at Israel."
In reviewing this sacred promise of blessing and cursing, Paul is careful to add: This means that not all of Abraham's children are children of God, but only those who believe the promise of salvation which he made to Abraham (Romans 9:8, The Living Bible). In other words, believers today are recipients of that promise because we are considered His "chosen ones." Through Christ, we were adopted into His family and His glorious promises are ours. We are not in bondage to sin any longer but wonderfully free in Jesus. The "genesis" of abundant life for each believer begins at the cross.
“And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
Genesis 12:3 KJV
