Then [Jesus] went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled.
Mark 6:51
A time loop is used by film directors as a way to have a character repeat and re-experience a moment in time. One of the most well-known recent films of this genre was the 1993 comedy Groundhog Day in which a TV reporter repeated the same day over and over and over.
Sometimes it seems Jesus’ disciples started out each day with no memory of lessons learned. For example, they witnessed Jesus feeding a crowd of many thousands with only five loaves of bread and two fish (Mark 6:30-44). In other words, they had witnessed Jesus doing an amazing miracle! Then, just a few hours later, with the miracle fresh in their memories, they witnessed Jesus walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee and “cried out” and “were troubled” (Mark 6:49-50). In other words, they didn’t connect one miracle with another; each new miracle brought a “Who is this?” response from them.
We must treasure everything God does for us, big or small, building miracle memory. Not only will it lessen our surprise but it will increase our faith.
