The Pearly White City by David Jeremiah

Wednesday, October 24
The Pearly White City

The great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.
Revelation 21:10-11

If you’ve been to a funeral service in the American South or attended a Gospel Music Convention, you’ve probably heard “The Pearly White City,” a 1902 Gospel song by Arthur Ingler that paints a beautiful picture of heaven. The final verse speaks of our eternal role as overcomers:

My loved ones are gathering yonder,
My friends too are passing away,
And soon I shall join their bright number,
And dwell in eternity’s day;
They’re safe now in glory with Jesus,
Their trials and battles are past.
They overcame sin and the tempter,
They’ve reached that fair city at last.

We will eternally overcome sin and the tempter when we reach heaven. That’s why our lives are filled with hope. We are longing to walk with our Lord in His pearly white city.

Now I am watching, waiting, and longing, for the white city that’s soon coming down.
Arthur F. Ingler
