A few years ago, someone at Cape Kennedy left out a hyphen; and it cost the government over eighteen million dollars. The hyphen was omitted when instructions were fed into a computer that guided a rocket in flight. The bar was missing, so the rocket veered off course and had to be destroyed. Little actions and omissions can have devastating consequences. Today, we read about this in God's Word.
Esau soon learned little things mean a lot. He did not think much about selling his birthright that day when he was hungry. He, no doubt, felt he was the favorite of his father; and the blessing would be his anyway. How wrong he was! That simple act cost him and his descendants a multitude of blessings from God.
Satan would tell us little things are unimportant. He would tempt us to do little sins, saying they are too small to be punished. He would encourage us to neglect small kindnesses and obligations to God. However, when we neglect watching over the little things, we find disaster comes. Just as the omission of the hyphen was costly, and Esau's little mistake tragic, so is our neglect of small matters. We need to remember that Jesus said: He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much (Luke 16:10).
“And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?”
