Charles Goodyear spent many years learning how to keep rubber from becoming soft when warm and brittle when cold. One night, by accident, he left a piece of rubber smeared with sulfur near a hot stove. The next morning, he found a remarkable change had taken place; this was the solution he sought. His unexpected discovery ushered in a new industry. He called the new process "vulcanizing." Unexpected finds like this are called serendipities. Jacob experienced such serendipity.
Perhaps the greatest thrill of Jacob's life was an unexpected meeting with Deity. While fleeing from Esau, his brother, Jacob suddenly found himself in the very sanctuary of God. There, he received a promise he would never forget. This unexpected meeting would set the course of his life and bless him the rest of his days.
The thrilling thing about knowing Christ is that often He reveals Himself to us when we least expect Him and gives us blessings greater than we anticipate. These exciting meetings can happen during prayer, while walking down the street, working, or at any other time. As our minds are stayed on Him, suddenly, He is there; and we feel a richness not known by the world. The psalmist noted: Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me (Psalm 139:7-10).
“And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not. And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
Genesis 28:16-17 KJV
