Lost and Found By Chad Zeleny (Iowa)

The father said to his servants, “This son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” So they began to celebrate.

LUKE 15:24 (NIV)

Recently, our house cat, Charlie, managed to sneak outside and disappear. For two weeks our family searched the neighborhood, prayed, and even passed out fliers with her picture; but sadly we couldn’t find her. As hope began to fade, God answered our prayers and Charlie returned home safe and sound. This experience reminded me of the parable of the prodigal son. Like the younger son in this parable, I sometimes stray from God’s home and choose my own path. Perhaps I don’t always stray far, but little choices such as neglecting my scripture reading to watch TV, skipping a prayer before a meal, or not offering help to someone in need lead me away from God. Although paths leading away from our spiritual home may seem tempting, Christ’s death and resurrection promise us a greater reward in God’s house for eternity. When we are tempted to leave the safety and security of God’s home, we can always turn to God for direction through prayer and meditation. If we do go astray, God is always waiting for us to return. The joy and celebration when the lost return to God’s home is unfathomable. (See Luke 15:7, 10.) God’s arms are always open and waiting for the lost to return.

Dear God, thank you for your abundant grace. If we lose our way, help us to find the path back to your love and forgiveness. Amen.
