Read: John 14:15-20
I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. (v. 18)
When I was young, every time we had a particularly bad storm that knocked out power to our home, my father would put on his raincoat and, with lightning flashing and thunder crashing, leave the house and enter the storm. I did not want him to go because I didn’t understand. My father worked for the local power company, and he had to leave me in order to restore power not only to our home, but also to everyone else’s home.
On the night before he was going to be crucified, Jesus told his disciples he had to leave. They didn’t understand. Figuratively, it was like lightning flashing and thunder crashing around them. Leaving was not what a Savior should do! He promised that although the world was no longer going to see him, they would see him. He was still going to come to them. In fact, he was going to send the Holy Spirit who would be with them forever, dwelling within each of them. In this, he was not only going to give power to them, but give power to all believers in every future generation.
Today, when the storms rage all around us and we feel abandoned, remember the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus left this world to give each of us who believe a power that never goes out, no matter how strong the winds blow or the lightning strikes. —Kelly Slaybaugh
As you pray, thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us forever.
