What God Is Like by Lou Lots

What God Is Like
February 17, 2019
Read: John 14:8-11
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. (v. 9)
A four-year-old girl, informed by her parents that her newborn baby brother had “come from God,” walked into the nursery, leaned over her sleeping sibling, and whispered, “So what’s God like?” If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (v. 9), he says.
Like the children of Israel and their golden calf, we try to fashion our own God, making him into what we want him to be. But when I look at Jesus, I am struck by how different the real God is from the one I have imagined. The God I have created in my mind blesses my country and opposes my country’s enemies; but the God I see in Jesus loves the whole world, including my country’s enemies. The God I have created allows me to nurse my grudges against people who have hurt me; the God I see in Jesus expects me to forgive my enemies again and again. The God I have created wants me to be affluent and prosperous; the God I see in Jesus takes sides with the poor and instructs me to do the same. The God I have created wants me to be an important person, high and mighty, a big shot; but in Jesus I discover a God who expects me to wash feet.
And somewhere inside me a voice is whispering, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me?” —Lou Lotz
As you pray, ask God to help you see him.
