It’s Not Forever

Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. (v. 2)
My mom decorates her house for the various seasons of the year, and she likes to use items from nature—pine boughs around Christmas, fresh flowers in spring, and bowls of apples in the fall. One autumn, she collected acorns to put in the bottom of a candleholder. When winter came around, she packed the acorns into a bag to save for next year. But the following fall, she found that each acorn had a tiny worm that had hatched while in storage and thus the acorns had rotted. Those acorns served their purpose, but they didn’t last long. And the next year there were plenty more acorns to be found.
We fill our homes and our lives with all sorts of possessions. Certainly, most of them last longer than those acorns, but they all have a limited lifespan. We work to fill our bank accounts and buy the latest gadgets. We find security in a closet full of clothes or a wallet full of credit cards. But money and things won’t meet all of our needs.
That’s not to say that we shouldn’t earn money. It’s good to meet our needs, and it’s even good to save for a time when we will need a little extra. But when collecting more things or bigger bank accounts becomes our goal, we put our trust in things that won’t last, rather than in the God who is generous toward us. —Jen Petersen
As you pray, ask God to help you trust less in your possessions and more in him.
