Our Eyes Look to the Lord by David Bast

Our Eyes Look to the Lord
March 20, 2019
Read: Psalm 123
As the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God. (v. 2)
Arrogance is hard to take, isn’t it? I can put up with a lot from people, but not from people I know are looking down on me. The psalmist was the same way. He’s had more than enough of scorn and contempt from those who thought they were better because they had more money than he did (v. 4).
So what does he do about it? It’s easy to take a wrong turn here. When we feel the scorn of others, we’re tempted to make ourselves feel better by finding someone even lower on the social scale and heaping scorn on them. We vent our anger and humiliation by channeling it downwards: the father punishes the son, the son hits his younger brother, and the little boy kicks the cat. But the psalmist finds healing not by looking down but by looking up. “To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens” (v. 1).
Compared to God, we’re all low, way down among the servants. The vast difference between us mortals and the one who is enthroned on high makes all our human distinctions of class or race or wealth or accomplishment seem trivial by comparison. Because whoever we are, or whatever we have done, we still have the same fundamental need. “So our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he has mercy upon us” (v. 2). —David Bast
As you pray, humble yourself before the Lord and meditate on his greatness.
