Read: Psalm 132
The LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling place. (v. 13)
King David wanted to do something nice for God. After all, God had blessed him in so many ways. The Lord had given David a new kingdom, a new capital city, a grand new palace. So David decided to build God a new house, too. “Not so fast,” said the Lord. “It’s not for you to build me a house. Instead, I will build you a ‘house’—an everlasting dynasty.”
The sons who followed David were mostly disappointments, and the royal line was extinguished. After Judah went into exile, no descendant of David ever ruled again as king. But that didn’t mean the Lord’s promise came to nothing. Jesus is the true Son of David. His kingdom is eternal, his reign will never end.
Jesus is also the true house of God. His body is the dwelling place for God on earth, the one in whom God can be known personally and through whom God can be truly worshiped. A Samaritan woman once asked Jesus a question about where the right place to worship God was. Was it in Samaria or Jerusalem? Jesus replied, “The hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father . . . True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (John 4:21, 23).
Since Jesus came into the world, worship is no longer about a place or a building. It’s about a person. —David Bast
As you pray, worship God in spirit and truth.
