Read: James 2:1-8
Have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? (v. 4)
My boys have a deep sense of justice and fairness. It isn’t always accurate or impartial and it often gets expressed starting with a “but”—”But that’s not fair!” It usually has something to do with believing that their parents are biased. One will claim that the other is getting off too easily for a wrong committed, or that the other never gets in trouble. They seem to always be on the lookout for favoritism.
I have two boys whom I deeply love. And even though they are incredibly different from one another—or maybe because of it—I could never pick a favorite. There are certainly moments where one or the other is easier to get along with. They both have their challenges, and they both bring different gifts to our family. And at different times, they need different things. I do react differently to each of them sometimes, but that’s only because they are different people, not because I like one of them better.
If I, a flawed human, love both my children equally, how much more must our heavenly Father love all of his children equally! We are all unique individuals and we all make mistakes. But God loves all of us and does not pick favorites. So who are we to make distinctions among ourselves, whether based on wealth or appearances or even based on who we think is a better Christian? —Jen Petersen
