Jesus, Mr. Wonderful by Steve Laman

Jesus, Mr. Wonderful
April 3, 2019
Read: Isaiah 9:1-7
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (v. 6 NIV)
In preparing to meet with the representative of the company that made my speech device, I wanted to refer to the name of a speech and language person who works at the company. When I typed his first name into the device, it said something unexpected. Instead of saying his first name, it said “Mr. Wonderful.” Retyping did not help. I concluded that when programming the device, he instructed the software to substitute this lofty title for his name.
You might have checked the calendar after reading the Scripture for this meditation. Usually, we only hear these verses at Christmastime. Reading Isaiah’s prophecy about Jesus in April might be surprising—just as startling as hearing my speech device say, “Mr. Wonderful.” Any time of year is a great time to consider how wonderful Jesus Christ is. Everything about our Savior is magnificent. The way God sent him to be born was marvelous. During his 33-year life, he did some incredible miracles and healed many. The way he loved us, causing him to humble himself, suffer, and die so we can be forgiven and live forever with him, is truly remarkable.
Whenever I hear the name of that employee, I know I will associate him with the title he gave himself. May we always associate the word wonderful with Jesus Christ. —Steve Laman
As you pray, thank Jesus for being wonderful in your life.
