Without Distraction A highway shall be there, and a road, and it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. Isaiah 35:8 In 2017, a collision in Texas took the lives of thirteen people who were returning from a church retreat. The cause of the wreck seems to have involved a truck driving erratically; and after the collision, the driver was reportedly overheard saying, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I was texting.” Experts say America has experienced the biggest spike in traffic deaths in about fifty years, and much of the blame goes to distracted driving. It’s a reminder to us all to keep our eyes on the road and our hands on the wheel for the sake of all around us.

In a parallel sense, the Bible warns about getting distracted as we travel the highway of holiness. The Amplified Bible Classic Edition renders Hebrews 12:1-2 like this: “Let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and the sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course…looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus.” The Bible says “Serve the Lord without distraction” (1 Corinthians 7:35).
