From “Have to” to “Want to” by David Jeremiah

From “Have to” to “Want to”

You shall truly tithe all the increase of your grain that the field produces year by year.
Deuteronomy 14:22
When children are young, their parents set standards for them: pick up your toys, help with chores, share with your siblings, care for the pets, and be kind to all. The goal is for the benefits of minimal standards to carry over into adulthood and motivate them to do even more—not because they have to, but because they wantto. Obedience leads to blessings and benefits.

Deuteronomy 14:22-29
Israel began national life as a “child,” and tithing—giving to God for the support of the nation’s religious life—was mandatory. God’s goal was to bless their obedience which would motivate them to live generously as a mature spiritual nation. Tithing for the Christian is a place to start in being generous to God and others. Paul taught that the more we give, the more God gives to us.

Think about your own giving and whether you are in the “have to” or the “want to” category.

Our temporary stewardship will determine our permanent ownership.
