God acted swiftly to remind everyone that His holiness is not to be trifled with. God will not allow His glory to be belittled. God has used swift divine judgment against disobedience at the beginning of each new era (think of Achan in Joshua 7, Uzzah in 2 Samuel 6, and Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5). God’s judgment against Nadab and Abihu showed all future generations the seriousness and the sanctity of relating to a holy God. Philips Brooks, the great nineteenth century preacher, said, “No sin can be little, because there is no little God to sin against.”

“Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. And fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. Then Moses said to Aaron, “It is what the Lord spoke, saying, ‘By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.’ ” So Aaron, therefore, kept silent.”
