Precious in His Sight / David Jeremiah

Precious in His Sight

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.
Psalm 116:15

Psalm 116:15 is quoted frequently at Christian funeral services. Sadly, it doesn’t always get explained. God doesn’t value the death of His saints; He doesn’t rejoice when a believer dies. Rather, “precious” means something that is cared for and watched over. We could even say, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the life of His saints”—even up to the moment when that life on earth ends at the moment of death.

Recommended Reading:
Psalm 72: 14
The verse is found in Psalm 116, a psalm that praises God for deliverance from death. The psalmist hasn’t died; indeed, he has been spared from death by God’s care and protection. It’s a way of saying that God  honors and cherishes the lives of those who live and die for Him—especially those who die in service to Him: John the Baptist (Matthew 14), Stephen (Acts 7), the Tribulation martyrs (Revelation 6), and multitudes throughout the history of His people (Hebrews 11:35).

Your life is precious in the sight of God. And should your life on earth end before Christ returns, your death will also be precious in His sight.

There is no one who is insignificant in the purposes of God.
