Lessons From a Shepherd: Restoring My Soul

The Lord is my shepherd… He restores my soul.
Psalm 23:1, 3

In 2003, there were just fewer than 10,000 spas operating in the United States. By 2015, that number had more than doubled to 21,000. According to the Global Wellness Institute, the wellness economy (spas, tourism, real estate, fitness, alternative medicine, and more) was worth $3.7 trillion in 2015.

If we could pick one word to encapsulate the explosion in wellness trends, it might be “restoration.” People today could use some restoration for their soul. But this is not a twenty-first century need. David, the king of Israel, needed his soul restored, too. It is likely David wrote Psalm 23 after he became a king as he reflected on how God had been his Shepherd-King. David’s path to the throne was anything but easy and his reign as king was challenging as well (partly his own fault). It’s easy to see why he would write, “The LORD is my shepherd… He restores my soul.” In Psalm 19, David described how his soul was refreshed: “The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul” (Psalm 19:7, NASB).
Does your soul need restoring today? Turn to the promises of God’s Word to be reminded of what your Shepherd can do for you.
The Word is both a glass to show us the spots of our soul, and a laver to wash them away.
